Darkhan Trip

Darhan Trip Photos-020When we visited the Amarbayasgalant monastery, we stayed in the town of Darkhan, Mongolia’s 3rd largest city. Darkhan is about 4 hours north of Ulaanbaatar and on the main highway in Mongolia, and the road (literally, the tarmac) was beautiful. The drive was also beautiful, there was snow on the ground in parts and trees as we got to the very north. There were rolling wheat fields below the mountains — the aimig (state / province) of Darkhan-Uul is the bread basket of Mongolia.

We tried to visit a bow and arrow factory in a town north of Darkhan where they are hand made, but it turns out the guy was in Ulaanbaatar for the day. Oh well. So we kept going north to see the town of Sukhbaatar, which is on the Russian border. Most of these photos were taken through the car window, but you get the idea…

A view of the city of Darkhan from our hotel window -- this is looking north to the older part of town, the newer part of town has some taller buildings, but overall the city isn't giant.

Most amazing bridge. We passed by it in the daytime, and it looked like a normal modern bridge -- I was not expecting rainbow lights everywhere at night. Even the crosswalk is lit all crazy.
