I wasn’t expecting Mongolia to get into the holiday spirit since they don’t celebrate Christmas here. The big holiday is Tsagaan Sar (literally: White Month), the lunar new year.
But, apparently Mongolians also celebrate the new year of the Gregorian calendar in a big way, and there are decorations all over town. Families have New Year’s trees (my guess is this was adopted from Christmas trees during the Soviet period), and all over town and in stores there are trees, lights, tinsel, snowmen, and a few Santas and Merry Christmas signs. I even saw a big tree in a gas station parking lot. Bet your town can’t beat that.
